Veteran and acclaimed Odia playback singer Geeta Pattanaik has passed away this evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, sources confirmed. She was 71 years old.
She had been admitted to hospital earlier this month after suffering a severe brain stroke during a cultural event in Bhubaneswar. The stroke left her in critical condition, and she was initially treated at Capital Hospital before being shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private facility in Cuttack. Despite intensive care and medical efforts, her health continued to deteriorate over the past several days.
Her husband, Gopal Batra, had previously stated that doctors were uncertain about her recovery, and that she remained under close observation by specialist medical teams. At that time, Pattanaik was reportedly on ventilator support with neurosurgeons monitoring her condition.
Pattanaik was a beloved voice in Odia music for over five decades, beginning her career in the 1970s and rising to prominence with numerous classic Odia songs. Her voice was known for its emotional depth, clarity, and versatility, making her one of the most respected figures in Odisha’s cultural landscape.
