Odisha’s music fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished voices. Veteran Odia playback singer Pranab Kishore Patnaik passed away on Friday at the age of 88, bringing an end to a remarkable musical journey that spanned more than six decades. Patnaik was among the most respected voices in Odia music and cinema. His soulful singing, distinctive vocal style and ability to bring emotion into every song earned him generations of admirers. His death has left an irreplaceable void in Odisha’s cultural and musical landscape.

News of his demise prompted an outpouring of condolences from artists, admirers and public figures across Odisha. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief over the legendary singer’s passing and described it as an irreparable loss to the world of Odia art and culture. The Chief Minister said Patnaik’s melodious voice and timeless music would remain immortal in the hearts of the people of Odisha.

A Voice That Became Part of Odisha’s Musical Memory

Born on January 20, 1938, Pranab Kishore Patnaik began his playback singing career in 1958 with the Odia film Maa. What began as a young singer’s entry into the world of cinema eventually became one of the longest and most celebrated careers in Odia playback music. Over the decades, Patnaik established himself as a versatile singer, lending his voice to Odissi music, devotional songs, traditional folk music and other forms of Odia music. His expressive singing style helped him connect with listeners across generations.

His career was closely associated with the golden era of Odia cinema, when songs were an integral part of storytelling and singers often became as familiar to audiences as the actors appearing on screen. Patnaik’s contribution was not limited to a particular generation or musical style. His voice travelled through changing eras of Odia cinema and music, allowing older listeners to revisit memories while introducing younger audiences to the richness of Odisha’s musical heritage.

A Career Spanning More Than Six Decades

Pranab Patnaik’s musical journey lasted for more than six decades. According to reports, he lent his voice to more than 200 Odia films, working with several prominent music directors and becoming one of the defining playback voices of Odia cinema.

His repertoire reflected the diversity of Odia music. From romantic and emotional film songs to devotional compositions and traditional musical forms, Patnaik brought a distinctive character to every performance.

His voice was particularly remembered for its warmth and emotional depth. For many Odia listeners, his songs were not simply film numbers. They became part of personal memories, family occasions and the cultural soundtrack of an entire generation. That is perhaps why his passing feels like more than the loss of a celebrated singer. It marks the end of an important chapter in the history of modern Odia music.

Seven State Film Awards for Best Playback Singing

Patnaik’s contribution to Odia cinema was recognised repeatedly with major honours. Reports note that he was the recipient of the State Film Award for Best Playback Singer on seven occasions, a remarkable achievement that reflects his long-standing position in the Odia film music industry.

His award-winning performances included songs associated with films such as Sindura Bindu, Astaraaga, Jhiati Sita Pari, Kanyadana, Pratishodha Aparadha Nuhen and AshaThese recognitions were not merely awards on paper. They represented the appreciation of generations of listeners and the wider Odia film industry for a singer whose voice had become synonymous with quality playback singing.

Honoured With Jayadeva Samman

Among the many honours received by Pranab Patnaik, the Jayadeva Samman holds a special place. The veteran singer was conferred the prestigious Jayadeva Samman in 2016, recognising his contribution to Odia cinema and music. The honour further established his place among the most influential figures in the state’s film and music history.

In 2025, he was also among the artistes honoured with the Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Award for the year 2023 by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi. The award is regarded as one of the Akademi’s highest recognitions for outstanding contribution to the performing arts. Even in the later years of his life, Patnaik continued to be remembered and honoured for the enormous contribution he had made to Odisha’s cultural heritage.

CM Majhi Pays Tribute

Following his demise, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences and remembered Patnaik as a great vocalist who had mesmerised generations of people across Odisha with his timeless voice.

The Chief Minister highlighted the singer’s Jayadeva Puraskar, Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and State Film Awards and said his death had created an irreparable void in Odia art and culture. He also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. The tribute reflects the stature Pranab Patnaik had achieved in Odisha. He was not merely a playback singer but an important part of the state’s cultural identity.

The Voice May Be Silent, But the Music Will Remain

Every generation has a few voices that become inseparable from its memories. Pranab Patnaik was one of those voices for Odisha. He sang during a period when Odia cinema and music were undergoing significant changes. He witnessed the evolution of recording technology, musical arrangements, cinema and audience preferences, yet his voice remained relevant across generations. Today, the singer is no longer with us. But his songs remain. Whenever an old Odia song plays on the radio, television, YouTube or in a family gathering, there will be listeners who remember the voice behind it and the emotions attached to it.

That is the true measure of an artist’s legacy. Pranab Patnaik’s physical journey may have come to an end at the age of 88, but his musical journey will continue through the songs he left behind.

For Odisha, he was a voice of an era. For generations of music lovers, he was a familiar sound.

And for Odia music, his contribution will remain a treasured chapter in its history.

Pranab Patnaik may have left the world, but his voice will continue to live in the hearts and memories of Odisha. Odisha Katha pays its heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer. Om Shanti.
