Allu Arjun Reveals Why His Saree Look in Pushpa 2 Was His “Most Alpha” Moment

⏱️ 6 min read 👁️ 347 views

Allu Arjun is once again in the spotlight, but this time it is not because of a new release or a box-office record. The actor is talking about one of the most unusual and memorable transformations of his career; his saree look in Pushpa 2: The Rule.

For an actor who has built a strong image as a stylish and rugged mass hero, appearing in a saree, jewellery, makeup and blue body paint was certainly a bold creative decision. But Allu Arjun now says that playing a woman in the film was actually the “most alpha thing” he has ever done.

The actor spoke about the experience while appearing in Forbes India’s Showstoppers 2026 edition. His comments have once again brought attention to the Gangamma Jathara sequence from Pushpa 2, a scene that became one of the film’s most discussed visual moments.

Why Did Allu Arjun Wear a Saree in Pushpa 2?

The saree look was part of the Gangamma Jathara sequence, which is connected to the worship of Gangamma Thalli in the Tirupati region. The traditional festival includes men dressing in feminine attire as part of the celebrations.

In Pushpa 2, Allu Arjun’s character Pushpa Raj appears in a striking transformation featuring a saree, traditional jewellery, makeup and blue body paint. The sequence was not simply included for visual appeal. It had an important place in the story and became one of the film’s most recognisable moments. For a performer known for action-heavy roles and a powerful screen presence, the transformation was a significant departure from the usual mass-hero image.

Allu Arjun Says It Was His “Most Alpha” Moment

Talking about the experience, Allu Arjun described playing a woman as the “most alpha thing” he has ever done. The comment is interesting because the actor’s image has largely been associated with strength, action, style and masculinity. Instead of seeing the transformation as something that weakened that image, he viewed it as a demonstration of confidence as a performer.

His latest comments also show how an actor’s willingness to step outside a familiar image can sometimes become one of the most memorable parts of a film.

The Idea Came From Director Sukumar

The unusual look was not something Allu Arjun originally planned himself. The idea came from director SukumarIn an earlier conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Allu Arjun recalled that he was initially scared when Sukumar suggested dressing Pushpa in a saree. The team had already worked on a more conventional macho appearance, but Sukumar felt that it was not working for the sequence.

The team then began exploring sketches and different possibilities before deciding to take the character in a completely different direction. That initial hesitation eventually turned into confidence. Allu Arjun had previously explained that there was fear at first, followed by exploration, before the team realised that the sequence could become an important USP for him as an actor.

Keeping Pushpa’s Mass Image Alive

One of the biggest challenges was making sure that the unusual appearance did not completely change the personality of Pushpa Raj. Allu Arjun has previously explained that he and Sukumar wanted the character to retain his powerful and masculine screen presence even while wearing a saree. The idea was not simply to make Pushpa look different, but to make the transformation work within the character and the story. That balance became an important part of the sequence.

The result was a visual that audiences remembered long after the film’s release. The saree, jewellery, makeup and blue body paint created a completely different appearance, while Allu Arjun’s performance maintained the intensity associated with Pushpa Raj.

Why the Scene Became So Popular

There are several reasons why the Gangamma Jathara sequence continues to attract attention. First, the transformation was unexpected. Audiences had already seen Allu Arjun as the rugged Pushpa Raj, but the Jathara sequence presented him in a dramatically different form. Second, the scene was connected to a cultural and ritual setting rather than being inserted simply as a fashion statement.

And third, the actor committed fully to the performance. The sequence required not just a different costume but also a different physical appearance, expressions, movement and emotional performance. That combination helped turn the sequence into one of the most recognisable images associated with Pushpa 2.

Allu Arjun on the Success of Pushpa

The actor’s latest comments also come at a time when the success of the Pushpa franchise continues to shape his career. Speaking to Forbes India, Allu Arjun said the success of Pushpa has inspired him to take Indian cinema to another level. He also stressed the importance of making strong content, saying that average content does not work for audiences anymore.

For a star who has moved from being a major Telugu actor to becoming a pan-India celebrity, the statement reflects how his ambitions have grown alongside the success of the franchise.

What Is Next for Allu Arjun?

After Pushpa 2, expectations surrounding Allu Arjun’s next projects are naturally high. The actor is working with filmmaker Atlee on an upcoming science-fiction action film, with Deepika Padukone also attached to the project. The film is currently one of the major projects in his upcoming lineup.

Allu Arjun is also associated with AA23, which is being directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Meanwhile, the Pushpa franchise is expected to continue with Pushpa 3: The RampageFor fans, the interesting question now is what kind of new transformation the actor will bring to his upcoming films.

A Risk That Became a Signature Moment

The story behind Allu Arjun’s saree look is ultimately a reminder that some of the biggest moments in cinema can come from taking a creative risk. What initially made the actor nervous eventually became one of the most talked-about sequences in Pushpa 2. Instead of protecting his established image, Allu Arjun chose to challenge it. And now, looking back, he describes playing a woman in the film as his “most alpha” moment.

For an actor whose career has increasingly been built around pushing his screen image beyond conventional boundaries, that may be one of the most revealing comments he has made about the Pushpa journey. As discussions around the film continue, one thing is clear: the Gangamma Jathara look has already become an important part of Allu Arjun’s cinematic identity and a memorable example of how a superstar can use a completely unexpected appearance to make a powerful statement on screen.
