‘Back Benchers’ Set to Roll This September: Surya Cine Production Makes Its Debut with an Inspiring Story Rooted in Education and Life

The Odia film industry is set to welcome another promising project as Surya Cine Production prepares to launch its maiden venture, “Back Benchers.” The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tapas Sargharia and produced by noted educator, writer, entrepreneur and social activist Surya Narayan Gouda, is expected to go on floors during the first week of September this year. The makers are planning a theatrical release after the examination season in April or May 2027.

Unlike a conventional commercial entertainer, Back Benchers promises to combine entertainment with an inspiring message that resonates with students, teachers and families alike.

The Beginning of Surya Cine Production

Back Benchers marks the first production venture of Surya Cine Production, which enters the Odia film industry with a vision of presenting meaningful cinema without compromising on entertainment. Rather than simply delivering a campus drama, the film aims to celebrate the timeless values of education, mentorship and human relationships through a contemporary cinematic approach. The project also reflects the producer’s belief that cinema has the power not only to entertain but also to inspire society.

Who is Surya Narayan Gouda?

For thousands of students and well-wishers across Odisha, Surya Narayan Gouda is a familiar and respected name. Over the years, he has earned recognition as an educator whose unique teaching style, dedication and personal guidance have transformed the lives of countless students. Many of his former students today hold responsible and respected positions in government services, corporate organizations, educational institutions and various professional fields. Beyond academics, he has always encouraged students to believe in themselves, think differently and pursue success with discipline and determination. The affection and respect he receives from generations of students stand as a reflection of his lifelong commitment to education.

Apart from being an educator, Surya Narayan Gouda is also an accomplished writer in both Odia and English. As Chairman of Smile World, he has been actively associated with initiatives focusing on youth empowerment, social development, national integration and peace, making his contribution extend far beyond the classroom.

A Story Inspired by Real Life

One of the most distinctive aspects of Back Benchers is that the story draws inspiration from the life journey of Surya Narayan Gouda himself. At its heart lies the everlasting bond between Guru and Shishya, portraying how the guidance of a dedicated teacher can shape the destiny of a student.

The film carries a powerful message that success is never determined by where a student sits in a classroom. A backbencher, often underestimated by society, can achieve extraordinary success when guided by the right mentor who understands each student’s individuality and nurtures their hidden potential.

More Than Just a Campus Drama

While education forms the soul of the story, Back Benchers has been designed as a complete commercial entertainer. The film is expected to offer audiences a wholesome cinematic experience with romance, love, comedy, action, emotion and family values woven together with socially relevant themes.

The narrative also explores the changing landscape of modern education, innovative teaching methods, the evolving relationship between teachers and students, dedication towards learning, friendship, aspirations and the importance of positive mentorship in shaping responsible citizens.

Tapas Sargharia to Helm the Project

Directing the film is Tapas Sargharia, one of the most respected names in contemporary Odia cinema. Known for presenting stories that connect with audiences emotionally while maintaining commercial appeal, Tapas has carved a niche for himself through his distinctive filmmaking style and engaging screen narratives.

With Back Benchers, he is expected to bring together heartfelt storytelling and mainstream entertainment, giving audiences a film that is both meaningful and enjoyable.

Promotions Begin Well Before Production

In an interesting move, the promotional journey of Back Benchers began even before the commencement of shooting. A grand conclave was recently organised at Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar, where teachers, professors, educationists and distinguished personalities from different fields gathered to discuss the vision behind the project.

The event witnessed the presence of producer Surya Narayan Gouda, director Tapas Sargharia and members associated with the film. The gathering reflected a shared belief that meaningful cinema should begin engaging with its audience long before its theatrical release.

The initiative also highlighted the growing importance of innovative promotional strategies in today’s film industry. At a time when the Odia film industry continues to face several challenges, early audience engagement and community participation are increasingly becoming important factors in building anticipation and strengthening the reach of regional cinema.

Looking Ahead

With an inspiring real-life foundation, a socially relevant subject and an experienced filmmaker at the helm, Back Benchers has already generated curiosity even before cameras begin rolling.

As the film prepares to start its shooting schedule in September, audiences will now look forward to the official announcement of its cast, music, technical team and first-look promotional materials. If everything goes according to plan, Back Benchers is expected to reach theatres during the summer of 2027, bringing with it a story that celebrates the transformative power of education, the enduring bond between a teacher and a student, and the belief that every backbencher has the potential to become a front-runner in life.
