Bollywood Legend Dharmendra Dies at 89

Veteran Bollywood superstar Dharmendra, affectionately known as the “He-Man of Indian Cinema,” has passed away at the age of 89. His death was confirmed early on Monday morning, sending shockwaves through the film industry and among his legions of fans.

Dharmendra died at his residence in Mumbai after a brief illness. Earlier in the month, he had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital following respiratory distress and breathlessness. On November 12, he was discharged from the hospital and returned home to continue his treatment under medical supervision.  According to NDTV, he had been on ventilator support during part of his hospital stay. 

Dharmendra’s last rites were conducted at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai, with close family in attendance. 

Filmmaker Karan Johar, among the first to publicly mourn him, called his death “an end of an era.” 

The tribute messages poured in from across the industry. Dharmendra is remembered not just for his iconic roles, but also for his warmth and humility.

  • Awards: He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his services to Indian cinema. 

  • Last Film: His final on-screen appearance will be in the war drama Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan, scheduled to release on December 25, 2025.

Personal Life

  • Dharmendra is survived by his two wives — Prakash Kaur and actress Hema Malini — and six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol

  • Even in his late 80s, he was active on social media, often sharing his love for farming and simple living with his followers.

In his final days, Dharmendra posted a reflective message on Instagram that now feels like a poignant farewell. According to The Economic Times, his words read like a quiet goodbye to his admirers, reflecting on life’s journey and his deep connection with his fans.
