Legendary Jatra Actor and Director Debi Rath Passes Away at 71

Odisha’s Jatra industry has lost one of its most respected and versatile talents. Veteran Jatra actor and director Debi Rath, fondly known as “Mama” among theatre enthusiasts, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at his residence in Paradipgarh. He was 71 years old. According to family sources, Debi Rath reportedly suffered a massive heart attack and breathed his last before being taken to the hospital. His untimely demise has left the entire Odia theatre and cultural community in deep sorrow.

Debi Rath dedicated over five decades to the world of Jatra — Odisha’s vibrant traditional theatre form that combines music, dialogue, and social storytelling. Starting his journey as a young performer in local troupes, he went on to become one of the most prominent actors and directors in the Jatra industry.

Known for his powerful dialogue delivery and commanding stage presence, Rath directed and acted in numerous popular Jatra plays that captivated audiences across the state. His contribution to keeping Jatra alive during changing times earned him immense respect from fellow artists and fans alike.

Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from actors, directors, and theatre lovers. Many remembered him not only as a legendary performer but also as a humble and encouraging mentor for new talent. Prominent Jatra personalities have expressed their grief, calling Debi Rath’s death a “huge loss to Odisha’s cultural heritage.” His body will be cremated in his native village with full traditional rituals.

Debi Rath’s name will forever remain synonymous with the golden era of Odia Jatra. His unique acting style, artistic direction, and dedication to the stage continue to inspire the next generation of performers.
