Odia Film ‘Christmas’ Announced: Shyama Prasad Mishra Brings Prashanta Pattnaik’s Classic Story to the Big Screen

Another remarkable literary work from Odia literature is making its way to the silver screen. Veteran journalist and acclaimed author Prashanta Pattnaik’s celebrated short story “Christmas”, originally published in his 1981 short story collection Punashcha Andhara, is being adapted into an Odia feature film with the same title. The screenplay, dialogues, and direction are being helmed by senior media personality, columnist, filmmaker, and writer Shyama Prasad Mishra, marking another significant milestone in bringing Odia literary classics to contemporary cinema.

Official Title and Poster Unveiled

The makers officially unveiled the title and first-look poster of “Christmas” on Monday, introducing the emotionally driven family drama to audiences. Inspired by one of Prashanta Pattnaik’s most thought-provoking stories, the film explores the emotional realities of ageing parents and the changing dynamics of modern families.

A Heart-Touching Story About Love, Loneliness and Family

More than just a family drama, Christmas portrays the silent pain experienced by elderly parents who gradually become strangers within their own homes. The film highlights timeless values such as:

  • Love
  • Compassion
  • Forgiveness
  • Gratitude
  • Family responsibility
  • Human relationships

At its core, the film reminds viewers that no celebration can truly brighten a home if parents are left feeling lonely and neglected.

The Story

The narrative follows John Hamilton, a retired railway guard, and his wife Julie, who dream of spending the rest of their lives peacefully with their three sons and daughters-in-law.

However, as time passes, they find themselves increasingly isolated despite living under the same roof as their family.

While one side of the house is filled with Christmas celebrations—colourful decorations, music, delicious food and cheerful gatherings, the elderly couple quietly spend the evening in a dimly lit room, illuminated only by a single candle. Surrounded by silence, they revisit memories of the sacrifices they made, the love they shared, and the life they built for their children.

As the festive celebrations become louder, the emotional distance between the generations becomes even more evident. The story ultimately raises a touching question: Can the spirit of Christmas bring light back into John Hamilton’s life? Will his children realise the priceless value of their parents’ unconditional love before it is too late?

A Reflection of Today’s Society

Christmas reflects the reality faced by many elderly parents in today’s world. Through its emotionally engaging narrative, the film aims to encourage audiences to value:

  • Respect for parents
  • Emotional responsibility
  • Family unity
  • Gratitude
  • Humanity

The makers hope the film will inspire meaningful conversations about preserving family values in an increasingly fast-paced society.

From Literature to Cinema

Based on Prashanta Pattnaik’s acclaimed story from Punashcha Andhara, the film has been adapted for the screen by Shyama Prasad Mishra, who has written the screenplay and dialogues while also directing the project. The film will feature talented performers from various theatre groups, including actors associated with the National School of Drama (NSD), promising strong performances rooted in theatrical excellence.

Shooting Schedule and Release Plans

According to the production team:

  • Shooting is scheduled to commence in the last week of August 2026.
  • The makers are planning a premiere at PVR INOX in September 2026.
  • Following its theatrical release, the film is expected to be made available to audiences across India and abroad through OTT platforms.
