Former Union Minister Kanhu Charan Lenka Passes Away at 86

Odisha’s political landscape witnessed the end of an era as former Union Minister Kanhu Charan Lenka passed away at the age of 86. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after battling age-related health complications. His passing has left a deep void in the state’s political and public life, particularly among senior Congress leaders who worked alongside him for decades.

He was among the few leaders who saw Odisha politics transform across generations. From grassroots struggles to representing the state in Parliament, his journey reflected commitment, patience, and deep administrative experience.

A Political Journey Spanning Decades

Born into a modest background, Lenka gradually rose through the ranks of the Indian National Congress, becoming one of Odisha’s trusted faces in national politics.

He served as:

  • Member of the Rajya Sabha representing Odisha

  • MLA from Choudwar constituency

  • Union Minister of State under the government led by P. V. Narasimha Rao

During his tenure at the Centre, he handled responsibilities in key ministries including Railways and Agriculture. His role was considered important during a crucial period when India was undergoing economic transformation in the 1990s.

Unlike many modern politicians driven by aggressive visibility, Lenka maintained a calm, policy-focused presence. He was often described by colleagues as soft-spoken yet firm in decision-making.

Contribution to Odisha’s Development

Kanhu Charan Lenka consistently raised Odisha’s issues at the national level. Whether it was railway connectivity, agricultural reforms, or regional development, he advocated for better infrastructure and welfare initiatives.

Senior political observers recall that during his ministerial period, Odisha’s railway expansion discussions gained stronger momentum. Farmers’ concerns were also taken seriously in Parliament when he was part of the Agriculture Ministry.

His approach was never confrontational; instead, he believed in negotiation and consensus-building — something rare in today’s political culture.

Tributes Pour In

Soon after the news of his passing spread, leaders across party lines expressed condolences. Many described him as:

  • A disciplined parliamentarian

  • A leader with administrative clarity

  • A mentor to younger Congress workers

Political analysts believe his death marks the gradual fading of an older generation of Odisha leaders who prioritized ideology and public service over aggressive political branding.

Personal Life and Legacy

Despite holding important positions in Delhi, he always maintained strong roots in Odisha. He regularly visited his constituency and remained accessible to party workers.

Those close to him say he believed politics was not about power but responsibility. His long career stands as a reminder of a time when political patience and parliamentary debate shaped decisions more than media headlines.

With his demise, Odisha loses one of its experienced voices who witnessed and participated in several defining chapters of both state and national politics.
